Born on March 8, 1951, in Kottarakkara, Kerala, Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan is a star in the realm of Kathakali. His journey in this ancient art began under the tutelage of Kareepra Vasu Pilai, followed by advanced training under Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair and Kalamandalam Gopi at the esteemed Kerala Kalamandalam. His expertise spans various roles in Kathakali, with notable performances in Pachha, Kathi, and Vellathadi vesham. Unnithan’s dedication to Kathakali has taken him across the globe, enthralling audiences in the USA, UK, UAE, and the erstwhile USSR. His contributions to the art form have been acknowledged with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Kathakali, a traditional dance-drama from Kerala, intricately blends storytelling, dance, and dramatic expressions. Through elaborate hand and facial gestures, it narrates ancient tales, sometimes integrating elements of martial arts. Yet, what truly distinguishes Kathakali is its elaborate costumes and makeup, turning artists into divine and mythical beings. The process, taking up to three hours, enhances the spectacle and grandeur of the performance.

“Kathakali is not merely a performance; it is an immersive experience that transports audiences to a realm where myth and reality converge,” remarked Vidya Vasan, Uttarakhand Senior Coordinator of SPIC MACAY. She added, “We are honored to bring this cultural treasure to Dehradun, enriching the cultural tapestry of our city. It is only through initiatives like SPIC MACAY that Dehradun has the privilege to witness such sublime artistic expressions.”

During his circuit, Kalamandalam Ramachandran Unnithan and the troupe will also be performing at Unison World School and the Indian Military Academy on April 19th, followed by Raja Ram Mohan Roy School and Himjyoti School on April 20th.
