Earth Day Celebration by UCOST on 22 April 2024

Earth day was celebrated by Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology in collaboration with Women Institute of Technology and Uttarakhand Technical University Dehradun on 22 April 2024, under the theme “Plastic vs Planet”.

In this occasion a popular lecture was organised by the Council by Dr. Abhyanand Singh Maurya, Associate Professor Dept of Earth Science, IIT Roorkee was the lead speaker of program. 

Dr D.P. Uniyal, Joint Director UCOST delivered the welcome address and talk about harmful effects of microplastic, plastic waste management rules and health hazards of using plastic materials. 

Dr Manoj Kumar Panda, Director, WIT, Dehradun said that interdisciplinary research is needed in the area of plastic management and together we can make our planet greener cleaner and better place. 

Dr Reema Pant, Educationist, delivered an important talk on microplastic, it’s harmful impacts and its possible solutions. She also played a video message on “Our future is in our hand, stop throwing that away”.

Dr Abhyanand Singh Maurya, IIT Roorkee, gave  a presentation on microplastic in soil and aquatic system and how to reduce consumption of microplastics.

 Prof Onkar Singh, VC, UTU, Dehradun said that purpose of this program is to sensitize the community about plastic and its harmful effects. He also thanked Prof Durgesh Pant Director General, UCOST for this successful awareness program. He said that UTU will train some students as Green Champions who will aware people in university campus, its institutes and surrounding community about harmful effects of plastic and best possible solutions to avoid it. 

At last, the Vote of thanks was giving by Dr Piyush Joshi, Senior Scientific Officer, UCOST. 

Program was coordinated by Ms Jagriti Uniyal, Scientific officer UCOST. 

Shri GS Rautela, Advisor Science City, Ms Kanchan Dobhal, Scientific Officer, UCOST, Dr KC Mishra, UTU, Faculty member of WIT and UTU Dehradun and more than 250 students participated in this event.
