The legendary Garfield Sobers breathed his last on Friday, July 17. Fans and cricketers from the past and present have been flooding social media, paying homage to the stalwart and sharing condolence to his family and friends.
Sachin Tendulkar, one of the finest batters of all time, shares cordial relationships with many of his seniors from across the globe. His bond with Sobers was also very special as the duo shared many iconic moments together.
Tendulkar reminisced some of the best experiences he shared with the Bridgetown-born after hearing about his demise. The Master Blaster recalled that Sobers had conferred him the Player of the Tournament award in the 2003 World Cup. He also remembered their last meeting, which was in London a few years ago. The former India captain said that it is tough to come to terms to the fact that he is no more.
“It’s incredibly tough to process that Sir Garry is gone. I’ve been looking back at the memories we shared over the years, from him handing me the Player of the Tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup, to his warm words when he felicitated me for the century milestone. He was always so exceptionally gracious,” Tendulkar wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle.
“My mind keeps going back to when we caught up in London a few years ago. We were just sitting and chatting about the game, and it hits me so hard right now that it was the last time we’d ever meet. He truly was the ‘One and Only’. Going to miss him immensely. Rest in peace, Sir Garry,” he added.
