Delhi Wakes Up To Rain, Gusty Winds; Gets Much-Needed Respite From Scorching Heatwave

Several parts of Delhi woke up to light rain and gusty winds on Saturday morning, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave conditions that have persisted across the national capital over the past several days.

The sudden change in weather came after days of intense heat, with temperatures hovering around 43 to 45 degrees Celsius in several parts of Delhi-NCR.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a weak western disturbance triggered partly cloudy skies, isolated rainfall and strong surface winds in the city.

Heatwave Continues Despite Weather Shift

Although rain brought temporary relief, the IMD said heatwave conditions are still likely to persist in isolated parts of Delhi over the next few days.

On Friday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 29.3 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature settled at 43.3 degrees Celsius. In some areas, temperatures touched nearly 44 degrees Celsius.

The Ridge area emerged as the hottest location in the city with a temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius.

Neighbouring regions including Gurugram and Ghaziabad also remained under severe heat, recording maximum temperatures between 41 and 42 degrees Celsius.

Strong Winds, Cloudy Skies Expected

The weather department has forecast partly cloudy skies for Saturday along with strong winds blowing at speeds of 20-30 kmph, with gusts likely to touch 40 kmph in some areas.

According to the IMD, minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures could stay in the range of 43 to 45 degrees Celsius.

The department also said no major change in minimum temperatures is expected over the next two days, though temperatures may rise further around May 25 before dipping slightly afterwards.

IMD Issues Heat Advisory

Amid continuing heatwave concerns, the IMD advised residents to take precautions against dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

The department urged people to drink adequate water, wear loose cotton clothing and avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours between 12 pm and 4 pm.

It also advised residents to use umbrellas, hats and sunglasses while travelling outdoors and asked people to take special care of children, elderly citizens and pets.

Meanwhile, intense heat conditions also affected infrastructure in nearby Gurugram, where reports said a transformer malfunction disrupted power supply and impacted operations of the Rapid Metro network.
