BCB set to offer Mushfiqur Rahim coaching role post-retirement

BCB game development chairman Faim Sinha has confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board will offer veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim a coaching or mentoring role once he calls time on his international career. The announcement follows Mahmudullah’s recent appointment as batting coach for the Bangladesh A side’s tour of Australia.

Mahmudullah’s transition into coaching has brought Mushfiqur’s post-retirement plans into the spotlight. The experienced right-hander currently limits his international commitments to the Test format while continuing to play in the domestic circuit, making him one of the few remaining members of the generation that shaped Bangladesh cricket over the past two decades.

Faim stressed that players of Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur’s calibre represent an irreplaceable resource for the sport in Bangladesh, and that providing them a pathway to contribute post-retirement is something the board views as a core responsibility.

“Mahmudullah, Mushfiq, those who have played at this level in our country, who played international cricket for so many years at the top level and their caliber, presenting that experience to our players, making that arrangement, is our responsibility,” said Faim Sinha on Cricbuzz.

The game development chairman was equally direct about Mushfiqur’s situation specifically, leaving little room for ambiguity on where the board stands.

“Of course, I mean, we will definitely say this, if Mushfiq has a coaching interest or interested in working with cricket, with the experience he has of playing international cricket for so many years, or the progress in modern-day cricket that he has witnessed with his own eyes throughout his entire career, we will definitely want Mushfiq to come here and contribute, it will be our failure if we cannot bring him in,” Faim added.

BCB plans to reform its local coaching structure

Alongside the plans for senior veterans, Faim revealed that BCB is setting up a three-member technical committee to assess the performance of local coaches, identifying it as an area requiring urgent attention.

“We are forming a three-member technical committee to evaluate the performance of the local coaches and the technical evaluation will be done by our Salahuddin (Mohammad) bhai, our Mizanur Rahman Babul bhai, and Sohel (Islam) bhai,” said the game development chairman.

The BCB official also announced plans to raise district coaches’ salaries by at least 70 percent through a structured grading system, noting that stagnant appraisals had long held back coaching standards at the grassroots level.

Mushfiqur, Bangladesh’s all-time leading Test run-scorer, continues to represent the national team in the longest format. Any transition into coaching would only come after he steps away from international cricket entirely.
