Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University has organized “Narendra Sangeet Week”

The Centre for Folk Art and Culture Performance at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University has organized “Narendra Sangeet Week” in recognition of the contribution of renowned folk singer Narendra Singh Negi to the music of Uttarakhand. More than 80 participants from across the country have submitted entries for singing and will perform on this मंच (platform).

The event showcases the musical tradition of Narendra Singh Negi, which represents the folk culture of Uttarakhand. This is the first time in 52 years of his illustrious career—during which he has remained at the pinnacle of Garhwali music—that such a dedicated event focusing on his creativity and singing has been organized.

While inaugurating the समारोह, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Shriprakash Singh described the initiative as highly positive and a milestone in promoting folk culture. He noted that Narendra Singh Negi has made a significant contribution to Uttarakhand’s cultural heritage and continues to inspire younger generations. He also highlighted Negi’s recognition at national and international levels as an artist who embodies refined musical expression.

The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the efforts of the Centre for Folk Art and Culture Performance and expressed hope that it would establish a reputation similar to institutions like Prayag Sangeet Samiti, where every music learner aspires to be recognized. He emphasized the need to build similar respect for this centre among artists.

He further stated that the centre will work toward preserving Uttarakhand’s traditional instruments like the dhol, as well as its folk traditions and contributions of past artists, ensuring their transmission to future generations. He also mentioned the establishment of a Garhwali Language and Culture Conservation Centre at the university to promote linguistic and cultural growth.

During the event, Narendra Singh Negi expressed gratitude to the university, calling it his privilege that his work has been recognized in such a meaningful way. He remarked that such programs create opportunities for youth. He captivated the audience by performing his famous song “Thando Re Thando Mera Pahad Ki Hawa Thandi Pani Thando.”

On this occasion, the centre’s founder Dr. D. R. Purohit noted that similar traditions exist in Bengal in the form of Rabindra Sangeet, and Uttarakhand has a worthy artist in Narendra Singh Negi. He described the event as a significant step by the university in establishing a new cultural tradition.

On the first day of Narendra Sangeet Week, performers including Hemlata Bisht (Satpuli), Ambika Kimothi (Rishikesh), Dr. Sarvesh Suyal (Dehradun), Suma Rawat (Jaintoli Choundkot), Love Maithani, Ankit Bhatt, Shakuntala Negi, Prachi Kandwal, and Assistant Director Mahendra Singh Panwar presented their songs.

Artists from all age groups and regions are participating in the program. Notably, the event is also providing a मंच to performers who are appearing for the first time—some of whom have never performed on any stage before—making it a significant achievement for the centre.

The program was jointly conducted by Deputy Director Dr. Sanjay Pandey and Director Ganesh Khugshal “Gani.” Distinguished guests included Bipin Baluni, Registrar Prof. Y. S. Rawani, Dean of Student Welfare Prof. O. P. Gusain, and Dean of Appointments and Promotions Prof. Mohan Singh Panwar, along with a large number of cultural enthusiasts.
