The Monday after the end of the NFL regular season is known as “Black Monday” because it’s when coaches across the sport suddenly find themselves out of a job. But this year, the firings have continued throughout the week with a stunning series of twists—while the biggest question of all remains unanswered.
In the most unexpected development, the Seattle Seahawks moved on from coach Pete Carroll on Wednesday, ending a 14-year tenure that included a Super Bowl win a decade ago. Seattle made the playoffs in 10 of those seasons after luring Carroll away from the University of Southern California, where he built the Trojans into a powerhouse and won a national championship but ran afoul of NCAA rules.
