T20 World Cup 2026: Bhanuka Rajapaksa clarifies remarks on Indian players’ bats amid controversy

Sri Lanka batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa has issued a clarification regarding his comments on the bats used by Indian cricketers, which sparked major controversy on Tuesday, February 10. Rajapaksa, who has previously featured in the IPL, was earlier quoted as suggesting that Indian batters use bats that generate significantly more power than those available to other teams.

Earlier, Rajapaksa was quoted saying that Indian players use bats far superior to those available to others, suggesting they feel as if a layer of rubber has been applied to generate extra power, and added that such bats are not accessible for purchase by other players, something he said is widely known within the cricketing community. His remarks were interpreted by many as an allegation of “bat-tampering” against the Men in Blue during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.

“Hi all, just a quick clarification about comments from a recent interview that have been interpreted differently and, in parts, lost in translation. My point was meant as praise: Indian cricket is incredibly advanced, from its systems and infrastructure to its equipment standards. Their bat manufacturers are truly among the best in the world. In hindsight, I could have provided clearer context. Nothing but respect always,” he added,” wrote Rajapaksa on social media.

His remarks sparked widespread debate, with some suggesting possible irregularities in equipment use. However, no formal complaint was lodged with the ICC, and neither the Indian team nor the governing body issued any official comment on the matter.

Meanwhile, speaking about India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026, the Men in Blue were put under early pressure by the USA after opting to bat first, slipping to 77/6. Captain Suryakumar Yadav then steadied the innings with a composed unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, guiding India to a competitive total of 161 in 20 overs.

India’s bowlers followed it up with a disciplined display, restricting the USA to 132/9 in their allotted overs to seal a 29-run victory. India will next take on Namibia in their Group A clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Thursday, February 12.
