‘Security In Place For G20 Summit’: Delhi Police Conducts Helicopter Slithering Exercise

Officials stated on Friday that the Delhi Police has made comprehensive security plans for the G20 Summit to guarantee there is no infiltration, terror act, or sabotage, news agency PTI reported. The Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and the National Security Guard (NSG) are also stated to be aiding the Delhi Police with the arrangements. Madhup Tiwari, Special Commissioner of Police, Security, stated at a news conference that a special commissioner of police-rank officer will command security at the major venues.

Key Points

  • The helicopter slithering practise was carried out by Delhi Police trainee commandos on Friday, as the national capital prepares to host the G20 Summit on September 9 and 10.

  • For the huge occasion, the second batch of Delhi Police trainee commandos undertook a helicopter slithering practise at the Police Academy in Delhi.
  • The national capital’s security has been beefed up in preparation for the worldwide event. The Delhi Police began training the first batch of recruited commandos on May 31 at the Delhi Police Academy in Jharoda Kalan, utilising an M-17 helicopter.
  • “Detailed arrangements have been done ahead of the G20 Summit. We have been planning this for the past 15 days…We have planned how to deploy the outer force. We are all set to tackle all the upcoming challenges and situations,” DCP Northeast Joy N Tirkey stated.

  • Speaking on security preperations for the G20 Summit, Special CP Security Madhup Tiwari stated: “The dimensions of security arrangements are more for a mega event like G20. The multi-dimensional security has been well planned. With the help of capacity building, repeated rehearsals, repeated briefings, and debriefings we have ensured that the plan is well replicated on the ground as well. More than half of the Delhi Police is involved in this event and we have received assistance from CAPF & armed forces.”

  • “Comprehensive security arrangements have been made in Delhi in view of G20 Summit 2023 along with making sure that it does not cause any inconvenience to the people. As far as security is concerned, we have made every arrangement to make sure that there is no infiltration or terror activity and sabotage,” he further stated.

  • According to government sources, as many as 450 drivers from the CRPF’s VIP security section have been trained to pilot the special left-hand driven and bullet-proof cars that will be deployed to carry foreign guests to the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Delhi next week, PTI reported.
  • The Union government has hired or acquired a fleet of bullet-resistant and non-bullet-resistant Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and Hyundai Genesis cars to transport 41 top international visitors.
  • According to them, these specially-trained drivers would transport the premiers and leaders to their destinations in the national capital, such as the major gathering location of ‘Bharat Mandapam’ and the five-star hotels where the dignitaries will stay.
  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is the country’s biggest paramilitary organisation, with approximately 3.25 lakh troops serving in internal security roles. Its unique VIP security wing guards 149 high-risk individuals, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and the Gandhis – Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
  • The force has deployed a total of 900 people, including these 450 drivers, to provide proximate security to VIPs during the two days of the G20 Summit on September 9-10, as well as the one prior day of September 8, when presidents of other nations begin to arrive in the national capital.
  • This special G20 pool of the CRPF includes people who formerly served in the Prime Minister’s Special Protection Group (SPG) and the counter-terrorist unit National Security Guard (NSG).
  • According to official reports, the dignitaries’ wives would be protected by specially trained men and women commandos from another paramilitary organisation, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
  • Because more than 60 of the vehicles particularly pooled in to transport the VVIPs are left-handed, the CRPF VIP security wing has undergone special training to skill drivers for these cars, according to sources.
  • Other central armed police units, such as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), in addition to the NSG’s ‘black cat’ commandos, have been deployed in conjunction with Delhi Police to secure the summit’s routes and venues, they added.
  • For the huge international event, these forces have also deployed sniffer canine-assisted anti-sabotage squads, with the CRPF alone supplying 48 such teams.

G20 Summit

The G20 Summit will take place in the recently opened Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre (IECC) at Pragati Maidan in Delhi.

Prior to India taking over the G20 presidency in December of last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that India’s theme will be “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or “One Earth • One Family • One Future.”

The G20 summit is scheduled to bring together heads of state, economists, and officials from many sectors to address global economic challenges, collaboration, and policy coordination.
