[WATCH] Dinesh Karthik provides insightful wicketkeeping lessons during second ENG vs NZ Test

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik established himself as one of the finest wicketkeepers in the country during his playing days. Post-retirement, he has been serving as a coach and as a commentator as well, offering valuable insights and helping develop teams.

In a recent video shared by Sky Sports during the second Test between England and New Zealand at the Oval, Karthik, donning a London Spirit jersey, was shown explaining the biomechanics and techniques of wicketkeeping. This comes after England debutant James Rew has been a point of discussion over his keeping in the innings.

The erstwhile stumper-batter was seen undertaking wicketkeeping drills with broadcaster Ian Ward and was explaining the techniques and stances while wicketkeeping.

“Always have your head in line with your toes or probably slightly ahead. Not too far out or not too far behind. One of the reasons, and I think James Rew should be working on, is at times his head, his weight is behind. As a wicketkeeper, you almost need to be like a boxer in the balls of your feet. That will give you the best chance to move in a lateral way,” Karthik explained.

In keeping, it’s not funky, fancy drills. It’s about easy drills, but you’re doing it repetitively. Keeping is all about repetition. The more you practise, the better you get,” he added.

Karthik will be with the London Spirit in the 2026 Men’s Hundred as their batting coach and mentor. He joins head coach Andy Flower, with the pair having seen a successful stint with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, lifting their elusive maiden title and helping them successfully defend it in the following season.

For England, Rew is making his debut after wicketkeeper Jamie Smith pulled out to attend the birth of his second child. The highly rated prospect from Somerset has had an ordinary showing behind the stumps and scored 24 in the first innings, getting out to a short ball from Will O’Rourke.
