‘Hasn’t really settled down’ – Aakash Chopra reflects on Shubman Gill’s poor record as ODI captain ahead of Afghanistan series

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has given a cautious reminder of India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill’s concerning record as captain in one-day cricket ahead of India’s three-match series against Afghanistan.

After a thumping win in a one-off Test match, the Indian team will be hosting Afghanistan with the series kicking off on June 13 at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala. Ahead of the highly-anticipated encounter, Aakash Chopra has reflected on Shubman Gill’s record as ODI captain.

The Punjab batter replaced Rohit Sharma as new ODI captain, and the Indian team is yet to win a series under his leadership in the format.

“Shubman Gill has captained in six matches, and we have lost both series. We have won only two matches, one in Australia and one against New Zealand. So, Shubman Gill, as a captain in this format, hasn’t really settled down yet,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel Aakash Chopra.

He has captained six matches, managing to win only two wins, while losing the other four, including a 1-2 home series loss against New Zealand in January 2026. However, Chopra believes that this series against Afghanistan gives Gill a good chance to improve his record and build some confidence as a leader.

“That’s a big story. You want to change that thing. You really want him to just stamp his authority, although he is not stopping with the bat. He has scored runs as a captain as well, and he will continue to score runs. Considering the kind of form he is in, you will look towards him to score runs,” he continued.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s ODI record as a pure batter tells a different story altogether. Since making his debut in 2019 in New Zealand, the right-hander has amassed 2953 runs in just 61 matches at a stunning batting average of 55.72. He also remains one of only five Indians to score a double century in OD cricket.
