27th September 2023, Dehradun: Under the banner of SPIC MACAY, a captivating Pung Cholam (Sankirtan) and Thang Ta (Manipuri Martial Art) performance was held by Khumukcham Romendro Singh and Group today at the Dolphin PG Institute and the Indian Military Academy. In the three-day long circuit, the performances were also held at various institutions, including Mount Litera Zee School, Rashtriya Indian Military College, The Asian School, and The Doon School.

The program commenced with the performance of Pung Cholam by a talented ensemble of artists, including Khumukcham Romendro Singh, Yengkhom Dharmaraj Singh, Mayanglambam Harichandra Singh, Sanasam Rojar Singh, and Amom Rojit Singh. This traditional Manipuri dance, often referred to as Mrindanga Kirtan or Dhumal, is an intricate fusion of rhythm and movement. Pung Cholom is characterized by its rhythmic drumming, performed exclusively by male artists, either as part of Nata Sankirtan or as a standalone presentation.

During the performances, The Pung Cholam dance featured intricate footwork, graceful and vigorous movements, and a wide range of body expressions. It incorporated over 40 intricate talas and sanchars that represented specific rhythmic compositions. Notable taalas include teental (7 matra), charital (14 matra), tanchap (8 matra), rajmel (7 matra), menkup (6 matra), among others. Interestingly, these taalas draw their names from the ‘Tribhanga’ pose of Lord Krishna, further exemplifying the spiritual connection within the art form.

The drummers skillfully produced sounds resembling thunder, bird calls, and animal noises. It is a testament to Bhakti Ras, an expression of devotion, and is exclusively performed by male artists, who infuse their passion and dedication into every captivating performance.

The second part of the presentation showcased Thang Ta, a traditional martial art form hailing from a small northeastern state. Thang Ta, also known as Huyen Lallong, originates from the warlike history of Manipur. The performances exemplified the rich cultural heritage of Manipur and left a lasting impression on the audiences. It was performed by skilled artists including Okram Thonglenngamba Meetei, Nomeikapam Chalenger Meetei, and Haobijam Prithingamba Meetei.

“In response to a student’s inquiry about their journey in mastering this art form, one of the artists eloquently expressed, ‘Since childhood, this art form has been an integral part of our education, taught in our schools. It’s not just a skill we acquire; it’s a heritage we inherit and a passion that has been nurtured from the very beginning.'”
