Bihar Villagers Burn Alive 5 Of Family Over Suspicion Of Practising Black Magic, 3 Arrested

Five members of a family died after they were allegedly burnt alive by villagers in Bihar’s Purnea over suspicion of practicising witchcraft. Police have recovered their charred bodies from the village and arrested three people in connection with the brutal murder.

Pankaj Kumar Sharma, SDPO Sadar Purnea, said that the police received a call about the incident at around 5:00 AM on Monday. The caller, a minor named Sonu Kumar, informed that the members of Oraon community assaulted his family and burnt them alive over suspicion of black magic, news agency ANI reported.

The police then reached the village and launched an investigation during which they discovered that five people, identified as Babulal Oraon, Sita Devi, Manjit Oraon, Aranaia Devi, and Kakto, were missing. Later, their charred bodies were recovered.

Further probe revealed that the child of one villager named Ramdev Oraon had died three days ago, and the villagers linked it to the family, suspecting they indulged in black magic to kill the child, SDPO Sharma said.

Purnea DIG Pramod Kumar Mandal said a child of Ramdev Mahto’s family was unwell and they had forced the victims to heal him. “When the child did not recover, the five were killed on spot. In the morning, the bodies were packed in a sack, carried in a tractor and dumped in a water body,” he said.

The three arrested accused includes the tractor owner as well. The tractor has been seized.

Assuring strict action against those involved, the DIG added: “We are going on a special raid. We hope to arrest all accused soon…40-50 people were present at the site of the incident. We have an eyewitness with us, he is a child of the bereaved family. His statement has been recorded.”

Tejashwi Yadav Slams Bihar Govt

Former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav took to X, where he lashed out at the government over the collapsed law and order in the state.

“In Purnia, 5 members of the same family were burned alive and killed. Due to DK Tax, anarchy is at its peak in Bihar, DGP/CS helpless, law and order collapsed,” he wrote in Hindi.

“Day before yesterday in Siwan, 3 people were killed in a massacre. In recent days, 3 died in a massacre in Buxar. In Bhojpur, 3 died in a massacre,” Yadav further wrote citing similar incidents in the state.

Taking a jibe at CM Nitish Kumar, Yadav said: “Criminals alert, Chief Minister unconscious. Corrupt party thriving, police defeated.”

Investigation in the matter is underway.
