Purnea MP Pappu Yadav is never too far from a headline. He has again stirred up a storm — this time with a fistful of cash and a camera rolling. A video doing the rounds on social media shows the Bihar MP handing what looks like a wad of currency notes to a man claiming to be a journalist. What followed was less journalism, more audition tape for ‘Bhakt of the Year’.
The man eagerly approaches Yadav’s car, presumably to get a byte on the recent flood situation in Ara, where homes were reportedly swept away. But before his mic could even fully stretch out, Yadav stuffs the cash into his hand with a calm “Rakh lo (Keep it).”
That’s when the magic happens.
Suddenly, in the same fervour of a neta winning a prime seat, the reporter brushes off the transaction with a line that deserves its own T-shirt: “Koi baat nahi, ye to pyaar hai (It’s alright, this is love).”
Then comes the byte: equal parts dramatic and democratic. Pappu Yadav declares, “Whatever I do… only the poor and victimised have a right over my life and property. I don’t view Bihar through caste, creed, or religion. I will save Bihar and live for the state.”
By this point, the journalist is ‘sold’, in every sense of the word.
Grabbing his cue like a pro, he swings into: “Pappu Yadav lives for Bihar! He’s the messiah of the poor!” The tone? Half news, half fanboy vlog. What really takes the cake, though, is what happens next.
‘Marengey Joota Sey’
“Show him. Show Pappu Yadav,” he demands of his cameraman, who’s already jogging backwards trying to keep the MP’s car in frame. The footage wobbles, but our reporter had no plans to let it slide.
“Focus kariye. Aage dikhao s****. Marengey joota sey! (Focus. Show him, you idiot. I’ll thrash you with my shoe!)”
And that is where the video ends, somewhere between reality TV and parody.
Whether it was journalism or paid promotion is now a matter of debate. But one thing’s clear: in Bihar, some bytes come with notes and some notes come with bhakti.
