The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has come forward to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) after the Marathon Apex Council meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Friday.

The Covid-19 situation in India is becoming increasingly grim, with the BCCI hinting that UAE and Sri Lanka will be out of the league with two options on the occasion.

Salman Hanif, Dubai City’s head of cricket and events, said on Friday that they were preparing all the facilities, hoping the league would be moved to the UAE.

With September-November being the only window for the 13th edition of the Cash-Rich League, the BCCI is awaiting the cancellation of the T20 World Cup scheduled from October 18-November 15 in Australia.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to hold a meeting on Monday to decide on the incident.

Domestic cricket

With the country struggling with increasing cases of coronovirus, the BCCI decided not to start the domestic season before December.

The domestic season, which traditionally begins in late September or the first week of October, is likely to cancel one or two tournaments as the board will make up for lost time and prioritize the country’s premier domestic tournament, the Ranji Trophy.

While no final decision was taken at the meeting, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly said that the season would start only when travel in India was safe.  It is to be seen whether the board decides to hold a small Ranji Trophy keeping in mind the risks of the trip.  In May, the BCCI GM cricket operation, Saba Karim, dismissed reports of changing the format of the Ranji Trophy.

Ganguly like Vijay Merchant Trophy (Under-16) and Cooch Behar Trophy (Under-19) insisted on keeping the youth away from the deadly virus.

Nothing concrete came out of the discussion on the Future Tour Program (FTP) of the senior men’s team.  Members felt that it was too early to take the call as international cricket returned with the England-West Indies Test series only last week.

Due to the epidemic, India’s visits to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have already diverged.  Virat Kohli’s long men’s home series against England in September is set to be postponed.

Spotlight on shah

Named of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in the council, Alka Bhardwaj objected to Jai Shah’s presence at the meeting.  Bhardwaj had questioned the eligibility of the BCCI secretary to attend the meeting, stating that as per the recommendation of the Lodha committee, Shah should go to the cooling-off period after the end of his term.

Shah, who was an administrator in the Gujarat State Cricket Association before becoming an BCCI official, has completed his six-year term.  Members of the apex council argued that there was no alternative in the rules for Shah’s resignation.

The board plans to place Dharamshala or Ahmedabad for the senior men’s team training camp.
