The Indian U19 team reached their fifth consecutive final of the U-19 World Cup as they beat South Africa by two wickets in the first semi-final of the Under 19 World Cup 2024. However, the journey to the summit clash wasn’t a smooth one for the ‘Boys in Blue’ as they were left reeling at 32/4 chasing a target of 245. Seeing their team in trouble captain Uday Saharan (81 off 124) and Sachin Dhas (96 off 95) got involved in a massive 171-run stand off 187 balls to help their team win by two wickets.
Notably, Saharan was also awarded Player of the Match for his match-winning knock. The 19-year-old is also the leading run-scorer of the tournament so far with 389 runs to his name from six innings at an average of 64.83 with one hundred and three fifties.
Born on 8th September 2004, Saharan hails from Shri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan. He began taking cricket seriously at 12 years of age and shifted to Punjab to start his professional cricketing journey. In the last five years, the India U-19 skipper has played at U-14, U16 and U-19 levels for Punjab.
His father Sanjeev is also an Ayurvedic doctor and a BCCI Level 1 accredited coach. In an interview with Sports Star, his father revealed that Uday takes a two-hour journey from Shri Ganganagar to Bathinda during matches and is currently doing his second-year B.Com from Bathinda University.
Uday Sharan scored a brilliant century against Nepal
In the Under 19 World Cup 2024, Uday has led by example as India are unbeaten so far in the tournament under his leadership having won five matches on the trot. The five-time champions beat Bangladesh, Ireland, New Zealand and Nepal to finish on the top in Group 1 and later beat South Africa by two wickets in the semi final.
Before scoring a match-winning 81 in the semi final, Uday scored a magnificent 100 (107) vs Nepal in the last league fixture with the help of nine fours. The Indian skipper will be eager to notch up another big score in the final and help India clinch their sixth U-19 title. India will take on Australia in the final on Sunday, February 11 at Willowmoore Park, Benoni.
