Effendi has now secured a second term as MLC with his previous six-year tenure ending last month alongside four other MLCs, reported IANS. In the recent elections through the MLAs’ quota, Congress secured three seats, while its ally CPI won one. The remaining seat went to BRS—all elected unopposed.

AIMIM’s latest win holds strategic importance ahead of the upcoming Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, scheduled for early next year. The party has either governed or played a pivotal role in GHMC leadership for over 40 years.

Vote counting began at 8 a.m. on Friday at the GHMC headquarters. Party president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, along with his brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, who leads the party in the Telangana Assembly, cast their votes along with the rest of the electoral body.

Meanwhile, The campaign period saw heightened political tensions, with the BJP accusing both the Congress and BRS of indirectly supporting AIMIM by not fielding candidates. The BJP further criticised the two parties for enabling what it called a “communal” party to win unchallenged.
