Gurugram in Haryana was the most polluted city in the world in 2018, NDTV reported, citing data released by IQAir AirVisual and Greenpeace, a non-profit organisation.

According to the report, 15 out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world are in India. That’s not all, seven out of the 10 most polluted cities are in India while one is in China and two in Pakistan. Apart from that, 22 of the top 30 polluted cities are also in India.

Delhi stands at the 11th spot, according to the report.

The data for the report is real time and has been sourced from public and government websites.In cases where rea ltime data was not available, the reports said, “queries were performed to collect historical data when it’s available.”

The main focus of the study was Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM 2.5), recorded realtime in 2018.

The report also said that out of the 3,000 cities studied, 64 percent exceeded that World Health Organisation (WHO) exposure guideline for PM 2.5. In South Asia, 99 percent of the cities exceeded WHO’s safe standard to PM 10 exposure.

According to a Bloomberg report citing the World Bank, India takes healthcare costs and productivity losses from pollution of as much as 8.5 percent of gross domestic product.

NDTV further reported that Beijing has made a significant improvement since 2013, when it topped all the charts and the city’s pollution levels have gone down by 40 percent since then.
