Renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam was the target of an FIR on Saturday at Bengaluru’s Avalahalli Police Station, which stems from claims that his previous live performance offended Kannadigas.
A member of the crowd asked Sonu Nigam to perform in Kannada, and Nigam reportedly responded by making a comment about it. This led to the pro-Kannada organisation Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) to make the complaint. At a college event in Bengaluru on April 25, Nigam stopped performing as the audience yelled out “Kannada, Kannada” many times.
Sonu Nigam’s remarks greatly irritated the Kannada-speaking community, according to the complaint’s filer, KRV president Dharamaraj Ananthayya. He said the singer’s statements might encourage violence and exacerbate tensions among Karnataka’s many language groups.
The Avalahalli Police Station is now investigating the matter.

Sonu Nigam’s Reaction
In his response, Sonu Nigam made it clear that he was not trying to offend the Kannadiga population, but rather that he understood and respected the spirit behind the demand and the language and culture of Karnataka.
The singer said, “The four to five people who were shouting were like goons… several other people tried to stop them. It was important to remind them that, during the Pahalgam attack, people were not asked their language. Kannadigas are a lovely people… It was important to remind those four or five people that you cannot allow people to threaten you. You cannot have people sowing seeds of hate in a land of love. They were not demanding, they were threatening.”
He went on to say that the video footage, in his opinion, did not provide the whole story and that this caused the situation to be exaggerated.
